even the people were killed at the air force base in Punjab State in North India terror attacks that are being seen as an effort to derail peace efforts between India and Pakistan.

Officials said five security personnel and two gunman were killed when armed soldiers in uniform mounted an attack early Saturday in the town of Pathankot airbase, about 50 kilometers from the border with Pakistan and India about 430 kilometres north of New Delhi.

India troops backed by tanks and helicopters back control of the complex after the battle of 15 hours.

The attackers used a car India, police officers who apparently hijacked the night before,to infiltrate the air force facilities.

Additional forces rushed in, elite commandos searching for basics, and helicopters makesurveillance of the city amid concerns that some of the attackers may have escaped.Sporadic gunfire could be heard through the afternoon.

Security has been stepped up in the base defense and other areas in the country.

Officials said they were still trying to identify the attackers. However, some security officials have said they believe India the invaders members perform-e-Mohammed (army of Mohammed), a militant group based in Pakistan, who want independence for Kashmir, the India-ruled.

Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh said in a statement worded carefully television:"Pakistan is our neighbour and we want peace, not only with Pakistan but with all ourneighboring countries. We also want peace, but if the terrorists carry out attacks onIndia soil we will give them the reply match. "

Last year, at least seven people, including a policeman, were killed in an attack on aborder town in Punjab. India says the gunmen were involved in the incident weremilitants who had infiltrated from Pakistan.

The latest attack came just a week after the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modivisited without notice, historic to Pakistan to meet with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif--the first visit by the Prime Minister of India in more than a decade.

The visit is seen as an attempt to revive the flagging peace process.

India accuses Pakistan of training and arming rebels fighting for Kashmir's independence from India and merger with Pakistan. Islamabad denies the charge.

Analysts and officials say the peace movement's political leadership of the two countriesin the past have often followed by escalation terror attacks.

Nalin Kohli, a spokesman for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, suggested India wouldpersevere with the peace effort.

"Every time there is a move toward normalization of relations with Pakistan, it isautomatically the case, since this is a power that does not want peace between India and Pakistan and also in the area," Kohli said. "However, as far as India is concerned, we will constantly do our best to handle that situation and ensure that the power is defeated."

This is the second terror attacks in Punjab within six months  in July, armed menstormed the border town near Gurdaspur police station, killing at least seven people, including a police officer. India blamed that attack militants who had infiltrated from Pakistan.

Punjab, along with territory disputed claims Kashmir, sharing a border with Pakistan.
